When talking about Ant-Man, it can get quite complicated since multiple people have worn the Ant-Man suit. The two people who famously donned the Ant-Man suit are Hank Pym and Scott Lang and as you will read below, they both have a fascinating and unique backstories.
An American biochemist who has worked on many projects, ranging from artificial intelligence to quantum mechanics. With the event of his first wife being murdered in cold blood Hank decided on putting all his efforts into fighting injustice, he quickly discovers what come to be known as Pym Particles. Trapping these particles via magnetism and the aid of specific compounds he was able to shrink a person down to the size of an insect and back again. After an accidental foray into an anthill upon being shrunk for the first time he decided he needed some kind of protection and communication deciding aid of insects at that scale would be beneficial. He set to work on how ants communicated and replicated it with his cybernetic helmet.
After the murder of his colleague Vernon van Dyne, Hank reveals his identity as the Ant-Man to Vernon’s Daughter Janet. Upon learning this she asks to seek revenge on the murderer. Hank agrees to help and teaches Van Dyne how to use the serums to shrink therefore turning her into The Wasp. Overtime they grew to love each other and became two of the founding members of The Avengers , also playing a crucial role in 20th century history.
Hank began working on a serum that would have the reverse effect and increase his relative size. The success came with a price though, because upon increasing size taller then 12 feet he would become proportionally weaker. He also realized the greater his size the more stress it was putting on his internal structure and surmised it would be fatal if attempted often and at great lengths.
Pym was the inventor of Ultron and basing the mental patterns of his brain he creates the first artificial intelligent robot. Ultron immediately brainwashes Pym and escapes to develop better versions of himself. After being exposed to some experimental serums he develops intense schizophrenia and creates the YellowJacket persona. suffering from his condition he claims he has murdered Pym and stolen his suit. Van Dyne realizing he is actually Pym plays along as to not agitate his condition. Pym as YellowJacket proposes to Van Dyne and are wed in the Avengers Mansion. Pym inevitably snaps out of his condition when Van Dyne is put in danger and because of all this he hangs up the suit forever. From there with his blessings he gives Scott Lang the suit so he may become the second Ant-Man.
A family man who could not hold a steady job turns to robbery in order to make ends meet, but like his previous work, he was not vey successful. he is apprehended and imprisoned for some time. on his release he finds his wife divorcing him so he buries himself in electronics studies leading to Stark Industries hiring him. When his daughter was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition Scott turned back to thievery in order to get her whatever she needed to survive. Scott learns of
the Ant-Man suit and breaks into Pym’s office and steals it. Pym curious as to what Scott would use the suit for put on the YellowJacket suit and followed him. Scott breaks into Darren Cross’s office to find Dr. Sondheim being held hostage to fix Darren’s own heart condition. With the help of Dr. Sondheim, Scott’s daughter survives and he returns the Ant-Man suit back to Pym. However after following and realizing the reason Scott stole the suit Hank decides to pass the Ant-Man suit down to the next man and lets Scott wear it as the second Ant-Man.
The Ant-Man suit has the ability to control insects and allows the wearer size reduction utilizing the Pym Particles. The particles utilize extra-dimensions and essentially move the extra mass to another plane in the meantime and would call it all back when growing to a normal size again. The particles also allow size addition by calling on mass from the other dimension to reinforce bones and muscles, however this has unforeseen
effects on the health of the person so can only be used sparingly and with limitations on size. Another unique attribute to the suit utilizing the Pym particles is the ability to shrink down so small one would enter the “Microverse“. This is a realm smaller then atoms where the user can traverse into alternate dimensions.
We have heard from Kevin Feige,
“The truth is, there is so much in Ant-Man: introducing a new hero, introducing a very important part of technology in the Marvel universe, the Pym particles. Ant-Man getting on the Avengers’ radar in this film and even – this is the weirdest part, you shouldn’t really talk about it because it won’t be apparent for years – but the whole notion of the quantum realm and the whole notion of going to places that are so out there, they are almost mind-bendingly hard to fathom. It all plays into Phase Three.”
This is more then likely a huge hint that at the very end of Ant-Man we see him shrink down to the quantum level and into the Microverse opening up a whole new realm of possibilities for the MCU.
My prediction: during the ever popular after credits scene, or at the very least the last scene, we see Scott Lang shrinking down below the Atomic scale.
Ant-Man will be in theaters July 17th 2015
